I am Rutger van der Tas, artist and cryptoart enthusiast. Driven by curiosity, I explore how we can do things differently, and I like to work together on imagining Utopia.

In 2014 I graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (DOGtime) in Amsterdam.

My practice is at the intersection of traditional and digital art. I combine classical techniques such as painting and drawing with digital tools, including AI and other computational processes. Since 2019 I have been active in the world of digital art and NFTs. I experimented with programmable art on platforms like Async Art and worked on layered art projects where multiple artists jointly shape one work.

In my work I explore the relationship between man and digital reality: how technology affects our lives, our attention and our worldview. In addition to digital projects, I remain active in the physical art world; my work has been shown in various galleries and museums. I keep exploring the boundary between the material and the digital.

Who is this archiving meant for?

Eusy’s archiving approach is for artists, institutions, and collectors who want to preserve digital work sustainably. Digital art is fragile: platforms disappear, links break, and images become detached from their context. Eusy offers an alternative outside commercial cloud services.

What exactly does Eusy archive?

Eusy archives the work itself: images, files, and the accompanying context. These are recorded on decentralized networks such as IPFS and Arweave, so each part gets its own permanent online address — independent of marketplaces or platforms.

What does this mean for artists?

For artists, the website becomes a lightweight, fast, and independent archive of their practice. The work remains available beyond temporary trends or infrastructures and won’t disappear when a platform goes away.

What’s the added value for institutions?

For museums, funds, and archives, Eusy provides a future-proof way to make digital collections accessible. The focus is long-term availability, transparency, and control over data, without dependence on commercial parties.

Why is this relevant for collectors?

Digital art is more than a token. Eusy helps ensure the work itself — not only the registration — remains intact and accessible, even beyond the lifespan of a specific marketplace or market cycle.

Disclaimer — nature of the archiving

Archiving via Eusy is intended for public, static, non-personal content. Think artworks (image, video, audio), texts without personal data, manifestos, essays, and documentation. Websites without tracking and metadata without personal information also fit this approach.

For this type of content, IPFS and Arweave are particularly well suited.

In short, CryptoArt is a digital artwork (a file) that is linked to a smart contract. That smart contract refers to a stored image or other digital work. This makes the artwork unique, transferable and collectible.

You can send CryptoArt from one wallet to another. This ownership and transfer are recorded via blockchain technology.

I see CryptoArt — and the use of NFTs (as they are also called) — as a valuable addition to your digital presence. It offers artists a way to give their work online official status, including provenance and ownership.

On social media, your content disappears into the 'black box' of the platform. What you post becomes part of an algorithm, used to fill timelines and increasingly to train AI. You are usually not (anymore) the owner of your work. The question then is: who actually benefits from this?

CryptoArt offers a creator more control and ownership over what you put on the internet.

An important advantage of this is that you have no recurring hosting costs for name and content, while still building a modern, decentralized web presence.

Sometimes platforms stop hosting images. When that happens, a smart contract can no longer load an image and you see, for example, an error 404 or a 'broken image' icon. The artwork then still exists technically, but is no longer visible.

To prevent this, I offer a pinning service. This ensures that your files remain available and findable on the IPFS network.

I use Storacha.network for this, a reliable pinning service. The costs depend on the amount of data (number of GBs) that needs to be pinned.

This way your work remains accessible and intact in the long term.

IPFS (InterPlanetary File System):

IPFS is a distributed file system where data is stored and retrieved based on content hashes instead of locations. Files are split, hashed and distributed across multiple nodes. Availability is not permanent: data remains as long as nodes "pin" it.

Arweave:

Arweave is a decentralized storage network focused on permanent data storage. Data is stored in a blockchain-like system (the blockweave), where miners are rewarded to preserve both new and old data.

Costs:

IPFS I can offer in the form of a subscription. For Arweave, costs are only associated with the first upload.
